Nowy Port is a historic port district at the mouth of the Dead Vistula into the Bay of Gdańsk. The Nowy Port Lighthouse (which fired the first shot of WWII), the ferry terminals and a direct view across to Westerplatte give it a character you won't find anywhere else in the city.
The district had rough years in the 1990s and 2000s, but for a decade it's been steadily reviving — Instytut Sztuki Wyspa, artistic cafés and regeneration projects. It's a pick for travellers who want character rather than postcard Old Town.
Transport: SKM from Gdańsk Nowy Port station reaches Gdańsk Główny in 12 minutes; trams 8 and 10 take about 25 minutes to the centre. The ferry terminal runs seasonal sightseeing cruises, including to Hel and around the port.
